Europeans as Terra Australis first knew the continent. The Dutch East India Company initiated the first European settlements in 1606.

Backpacking AustraliaAfter Britain had shipped over 160,000 convicts to Australia, many of Australia’s largest cities near the coastal areas expanded from the punished communes. In the end, the British monarchs took hold completely of the continent. The colonisers regrettably took care of the Kooris, the native inhabitants, with dreadful cruelty, which only got worse after the gold rush and the initial finish of voluntary resettlement that leaked into the centre, where many Kooris had ran to.

The opening National Sorry Day was in 1998 and has since then been an annual event on the Australian diary. The day is symbolic and in remembrance of that heralds modern Australia's willingness to go against its inception. The didgeridoo and the boomerang are now modern Australian symbol. Tourists gather for the splendid Uluru (Ayers Rock) to see watch the awesome sunset.
